In 2014, Leon County partnered with the City of Tallahassee, the United of Way of the Big Bend, and a local business owner (Rick Kearney) in a public-private effort to build the Kearney Center; a state-of-the-art facility that provides services and emergency housing to the homeless population in the community. The Kearney Center is a 24-hour comprehensive emergency service center that serves as a point of entry into a comprehensive slate of social and economic assistance by coordinating services and responding to immediate needs of individuals and families until appropriate permanent housing can be arranged. The Kearney Center also provides space for more than 30 local, state, and federal agencies, non-profits, and faith-based organizations to co-locate and provide wrap-around services, including emergency residential services, with a collaborative and collective approach that yields comprehensive solutions to homelessness.
