About the Program

Category: County Administration and Management (Best in Category)

Year: 2021

Traditionally, the Department of Solid Waste Management’s (DSWM) code enforcement officers swept through illegally dumped piles in hopes of finding something that would link them to the violator. Not only was the task tedious, but it often resulted in not being able to find any evidence that could provide a lead. Many cases would go unsolved and no one would be held responsible due to the lack of evidence - costing property owners and Miami-Dade County a lot of money to remediate the pile. The Department of Solid Waste Management partnered with the Miami-Dade Police Department to implement a surveillance program that has enabled the Department to capture illegal dumpers on camera. Through the use of the camera footage and collaboration with the Miami-Dade Police Department’s Illegal Dumping Unit, 19 illegal dumpers have been arrested and over $61,000 in fines have been issued.
