About the Program

Category: Libraries (Best in Category)

Year: 2018

Beginning in 2014, during Hispanic Heritage Month, the San Luis Library began partnering with Arizona Western College to provide the San Luis Annual Art Exhibition, featuring works created by local artists from Arizona and Mexico. For a month, visitors to the Library are able to see a wide variety of artistic creations celebrating Hispanic Heritage, ranging from oil paintings to jewelry. The purpose of this annual program is to spotlight local community talent, and highlight different aspects of Hispanic Heritage, which is the backbone of life on the Arizona-Mexico border. This past year, the art exhibit had over one hundred items submitted for the exhibition, including a life-size papier-mâché alebrije (Mexican imaginary creature), and there were over seventy attendees at the opening reception, including the Mexican Consul General and a student band who performed Latin American music. The outcome is that an Artists’ Club meets weekly at the Library, strengthening the presence of art in the San Luis community for current and future citizens.
