About the Program

Category: Information Technology (Best in Category)

Year: 2018

Over the past several years, many organizations have begun to make their data publicly available. The San Bernardino County Department of Public Health (DPH), wanted to go beyond just making data available, and wanted to create a site where its stakeholder’s, customers, and the public could go and see how the department was performing in meeting its goals. The goals are supplemented by data and a story to increase knowledge and understanding. In 2016, DPH began developing HealthStat, an open performance management dashboard. This dashboard allows Public Health to publish performance goals associated with its Strategic Plan for 2015 – 2020. It also allows Public Health to measure and track its progress, increases data use, drive evidence-based decision-making, breaks down silos to promote understanding and transparency. In 2017, HealthStat open performance dashboard launched with six tiles, making DPH’s performance goals and data available to all stakeholders. HealthStat’s achievements in that year include: data usage increased by 52%, executive leadership has a stronger presence, seven team members consisting of existing staff were trained, data was tracked with key targets and measures, and data governance was implemented. As a result, HealthStat was consistent with promoting DPH’s values to increase “Collaboration, Innovation, and Transparency."
