What is three inches tall and travels the world? Meet Hashy, Miami International Airport’s (MIA) travel wingman who goes on adventures with the airport’s passengers. Hashy was created for MIA’s younger demographic of passengers and social media followers. When he was created, MIA had only been on social media for three years, and the airport was increasing awareness for its rapidly growing social media presence. What better way to promote MIA’s social media channels than with a branded, smiling and squeezable hashtag for children, young and old? Hashy was introduced to MIA’s social media followers in July of 2016, and passengers were encouraged to help the airport name him. More than 200 Hashys were distributed and his formal name was launched. He was an immediate hit, requiring an additional 500 to be ordered to keep up with demand. He has been distributed at events; to passengers ready to board flights, to community partners and to fans that have a requested a Hashy through social media. Hashy has traveled the world to exotic destinations such as sailing the Na Pali coast in Hawaii, enjoying savory tapas at the Mercado San Miguel in Madrid, and betting on the horses at the Kentucky Derby. Passengers pose him in iconic locations and take clever photos and videos.
