Year: 2010

The Fuel Conservation Program was developed to be implemented in the event of a severe fuel shortage which can result from a local emergency or from events elsewhere impacting the fuel supply at Port Everglades. The goal of the program is to prioritize the allocation of fuel when supplies are limited in order to ensure the availability of fuel for the more essential services to the public. The Fuel Conservation Program designed for all 40 County departments, as well as over twenty external fueling customers, assigns a vehicle usage and fuel allocation/priority code to the over 13,000 vehicle fleet. When the program is activated, fuel is allocated to vehicles based on their priority codes. Proper administration of the program requires a regular, comprehensive review of fleet vehicles to ensure that the priority codes accurately reflect their role in providing County services during a fuel emergency. The plan also prompts County agencies to plan for operational alternatives in the event of an emergency and/or fuel shortage. The program was first implemented in the fall of 2008, as a precaution when fuel deliveries to Port Everglades were disrupted due to storms. The Fuel Conservation Program is a useful tool to ensure the continuation of County operations.
