Category: Parks and Recreation (Best in Category)

Year: 2012

Obesity and sedentary lifestyles are dangerous trends that are increasing nation-wide. Healthy living is a growing need and movement in the United States. Modeled after an initiative by the National Association of Counties, the simple concept of this program is to encourage families to form groups to spend more time outdoors while enjoying the variety of El Paso County Parks. The County facilitates the process by finding like-minded families and providing free activity guides and t-shirts. Through a public education and relations campaign, El Paso Coutny was able to encourage residents to leave their houses and engage in physical activity. The results have been increased outdoor physical activity, increased family quality time and friendships that may last a lifetime with minimal expense to the County.
