By signing the Air Quality Early Action Compact (EAC), three Upstate South Carolina countiesâGreenville, Anderson, and Spartanburgâpartnered with public and private industries and businesses to develop more than 20 strategies to improve air quality in the region. Several strategies that the county adopted to demonstrate its commitment in implementing air quality control measures in compliance with the Federal Clean Air Act included the Early Action Compact. One strategy in this program proposes a program to encourage the local generation about the use of green power. Since 2006, Greenville County has worked on the project until its fruition in 2008. The project required providing an efficient and effective means of gas collection, distribution, and usage; ensuring safe and environmentally sound operating practices; and arranging for the full utilization of methane gas generated. In 2008, the organizations involved announced the completion of the Enoree Landfill Gas to Energy Green Power Project. The project captures the landfill methane gas and converts it into electricity using two engines generating approximately 3.2 megawatts of electricity capable of powering about 2,000 average-sized homes annually. Landfill has is one of the most economical renewable options available in South Carolina and it uses proven technology which helps to improve air quality.
