About the Program
Category: County Administration and Management (Best in Category)
Year: 2012
The County of San Diego realizes that employees often have good intentions to sign up for the deferred compensation plan but somehow never get around to it. Eager new employees pick up the materials with the objective of reading through all of it and signing up at the first available moment. Unfortunately, that seems to be where it ends for some employees. Understanding the program features and the variety of investment choices can be cumbersome and stops many dead in their tracks. Ti address this issue, the County initiated an education campaign with the following objectives: 1) Make information on Deferred Compensation as accessible as possible 2) Provide that information in a setting conducive to asking questions 3) Reduce confusion and make it easier for participants to make investment decisions The county conducted a poll to see how employees felt about the education they received about retirement planning. The feedback showed that women wanted more. Creating a focused program presented the county with an opportunity to incorporate education aimed at a clearly defined audience while addressing current objectives and reaching a whole new audience.
