About the Program

Category: Criminal Justice and Public Safety (Best in Category)

Year: 2011

Court Services was established through the guidance of the Churchill County Criminal Justice Advisory Committee, which is comprised of members representing all of the county’s criminal justice entities, as well as city and county officials and local citizens, to help address jail overcrowding, as well as to reduce the number of beds needed in a new facility. Creation of the this department has directly benefited the local community, not only saving taxpayers’ dollars by more efficiently managing its inmate population, but is has also provided much needed services and information to the courts, detention facility, law enforcement, prosecutors, defending attorneys, and its criminal offenders. Court Services interviews inmates, provides verified background information to the courts and attorneys and, when appropriate, includes release recommendations with conditions, thereby helping to reduce unnecessary detention and jail overcrowding. Those defendants released to the program are monitored consistently according to their conditions, ensuring public safety and the defendant’s return to court.
