To celebrate the S.C. Association of Counties’ (SCAC’s or the association’s) 50th anniversary, SCAC leaders and staff embarked on a comprehensive effort to honor the history of county government and the association’s mission and major milestones. SCAC viewed this as an opportunity to pay tribute to the history of county government in South Carolina. As such, the scope of SCAC’s anniversary project included more significant products than merely an anniversary logo. SCAC was fortunate to have the assistance of state and local government leaders who were involved in the passage of the state’s Home Rule Act and the creation of the association to tell the story of this transformative period for county government. SCAC was able to share this important story with its membership via video and a special edition of its annual report. The results of SCAC’s commemoration far exceeded expectations. The anniversary video is a valuable educational resource that helps preserve an important piece of the state’s history. Staff has shared it with political science and public administration faculty at the state’s colleges and universities. Additionally, the association has a newly-designed annual report and a more efficient communication method for sharing this information with its membership.
