Be Local: A Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library Program

2012 NACo Achievement Award Winner

Montgomery County, Va., VA

About the Program

Category: Libraries (Best in Category)

Year: 2012

The program series was developed to draw attention to the many unique stores, arts-related businesses, cultural sites, and abundant leisure activities that make Blacksburg a special place to live, work, and visit. By marketing local businesses, we make citizens aware of the award winning services and products available locally as we foster the growth and sustainability of these community merchants. The series also included programs to help area hikers, cyclists, anglers, and paddlers explore the surrounding New River Valley and Blue Ridge Mountains. In an effort to be more “green” and encourage healthy eating, the county offered programs about local foods and gourmet cooking and cuisine. The programs increased community awareness of the importance of supporting local businesses and promoting the local economy. New partnerships were forged between the library, community residents, and businesses, indicating that the program was a great success.
