About Nick Macchione
With 30 years of experience leading health and human services, Nick Macchione serves as San Diego County’s Director of the Health and Human Services Agency. Macchione oversees a workforce of approximately 6,300 employees and a $2 billion annual budget, which serves over 1.3 million people. In his role, Macchione is at the forefront of a paradigm shift transforming how government serves the public. As the architect and strategist of “ Live Well San Diego ,” Macchione is championing a large-scale, social movement for prevention, wellness and whole person care. Since its inception in 2010, Macchione has partnered with hundreds of diverse governments, schools, businesses, and community based organizations to collectively unify a region where everyone can be healthy, safe and thriving! Under Macchione’s direction, the Baldrige Foundation recently recognized the Agency with the 2017 Silver level California Awards for Performance Excellence (CAPE) Eureka Award for Performance Excellence, and Edgemoor Distinct Part Skilled Nursing Facility 2017 Gold level for Excellence in Quality Award. Both awards acknowledge outstanding commitment to sustainable excellence through innovation, continuous improvement, visionary leadership and serve as models of excellence in providing high-quality care.
Macchione holds Master’s degrees from Columbia University and NYU specializing in leadership, management and policy and is the Baldrige Foundation’s 2018 Harry S. Hertz Leadership Award Recipient.
