Hon. Mary Ann Borgeson

NACo President; Commissioner, Douglas County, Neb.

Commissioner Mary Ann Borgeson was first elected to the Douglas County Board of Commissioners in 1994. She was re-elected to her 7th term in 2018.

In 1997, Commissioner Borgeson was the first woman elected to serve as chairwoman of the Douglas County Board and has served in this capacity for numerous years. She currently serves on the board of directors for the Nebraska Association of County Officials and was elected as 2nd Vice President to the National Association of Counties (NACo) as the first woman from Nebraska to be elected to this national position.

Commisioner Borgeson has served as chair of the NACo Health Services and Cyber Security Committees and vice chair of the Large Urban County Caucus, Healthy Counties, Health Services Committee, and is a member of the International Economic Development, Arts and Culture, Membership, and Programs and Services Committees.  Commissioner Borgeson is past president of Women of NACo.

    Renewed Support for Medicaid at 50

    In 1965 — 50 years ago July 30 — President Johnson signed the landmark legislation that created Medicaid. In so many ways, it was a different world then. Televisions had antennas and broadcast just a few channels in black and white. Gas cost 31 cents a gallon and the Dow was at 969. Tobacco had only just been declared a hazard.
