About Efren Corado Garcia

Efren Corado Garcia was born in Guatemala and was raised in Southern California. As a first-generation immigrant, Efren found himself navigating identities as an immigrant, non-English speaker, member of the LGBTQ+ community and an artist. Efren received both his undergraduate degree from Chapman University and Master of Fine Arts from the University of Utah in dance. He is also a certified movement analyst from the Integrated Movement Systems program. Prior to landing in his current job, Efren danced professionally with Repertory Dance Theater, where besides performing the vision of the company included the promotion of education, cultural competency, and inclusion through an embodied practice. Currently, Efren is the Diversity and Inclusion Officer for Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson.

Under the umbrella of County Services, Efren is focused on addressing inclusive tactics through policy, communications, programs, and partnerships. The primary objective is to focus on compounded efforts across County Services, where collateral partnerships with internal and external agencies elevate inclusivity in practice. In 2020 Mayor Jenny Wilson prompted the Council on Diversity Affairs, a group made of diverse community leaders and county experts, to develop an Action Plan to promote institutional change across county services. Efren serves as the operational director in charge of communications and partnerships with community organizers, collaborative work with county employee’s experts in areas such as Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement, Housing, Economic Development, Health Initiatives, Human Resources, and Youth in Leadership. Efren believes it is by changing the infrastructure of our systems that we can claim that our communities are inclusive, welcoming, and livable.
