About the Position

The Managing Director, Integrated Media and Content is a senior leader responsible for shaping and executing NACo’s integrated content, media, communications, and brand strategy. Reporting to the Chief Public Affairs Officer, this role oversees NACo’s Content Studio, County News newsroom operations, and the broader digital and communications ecosystem to ensure NACo’s voice, identity, and storytelling are consistent, credible, and compelling across all channels in support of county members, policymakers, partners, and the public.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead NACo’s integrated content, marketing, communications, and brand strategy serving members, Congress, federal agencies, partners, and the general public.
  • Ensure strategic alignment across editorial, video, audio, digital platforms, social media, email, paid media, and brand expression.
  • Translate NACo’s policy and advocacy priorities into compelling, accessible, and audience-centered storytelling.
  • Serve as a senior advisor on media strategy, messaging, and positioning.
  • Serve as NACo’s lead brand steward, overseeing voice, visual identity, and brand guidelines across all channels.
  • Ensure consistent, high-quality brand application while enabling creativity, innovation, and modern storytelling.
  • Strengthen brand recognition, credibility, and affinity through coordinated content, design, and communications.
  • Lead NACo’s Content Studio, overseeing creative development, production workflows, staffing models, and vendor partnerships.
  • Direct production of high-quality video and audio content, including episodic series, documentaries, short films, event coverage, and branded content.
  • Oversee the NACo podcast network, including editorial direction, production, and distribution.
  • Manage on-site and mobile production operations supporting NACo events, county visits, and federal engagement.
  • Provide strategic oversight of County News, NACo’s newspaper and newsroom, ensuring strong editorial vision and journalistic integrity.
  • Lead digital distribution and amplification strategies for County News across web, newsletters, social, and multimedia platforms.
  • Lead digital platform and channel strategy across NACo.org, social media, email newsletters, video, podcasts, and paid media, focusing on UX, accessibility, performance, engagement, and growth.
  • Direct best practices for audience engagement, content optimization, and platform-specific distribution across owned, earned, and paid channels.
  • Lead targeted digital and paid media strategies supporting advocacy, member engagement, and public outreach.
  • Develop and execute an integrated audience development strategy across all channels.
  • Establish KPIs and performance benchmarks across content, communications, brand health, and distribution.
  • Use analytics and insights to guide editorial decisions, optimize platforms, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing, multidisciplinary team spanning production, digital strategy, editorial, communications, design/creative services, and paid media.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • 10-12 years of senior leadership experience in integrated media, marketing, communications, brand management, journalism, digital platforms, or content production.
  • Proven experience serving as a brand steward or leading brand strategy within an agency, in-house or media organization.
  • Demonstrated success building and leading high-performing, multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong expertise in video, audio, editorial, and digital storytelling across platforms.
  • Experience leading digital platform strategy, including website UX, content performance, and governance.
  • Digital marketing and paid/earned/owned media experience leading teams and working with outside vendors.
  • Experience leading creative and content across multiple channels.
  • Deep understanding of social media, email marketing, audience growth, and engagement best practices.
  • Experience leading paid digital media, targeted content, or audience acquisition strategies.
  • Familiarity with county government and federal policy landscapes preferred.

Location and Travel

This position is eligible for remote and/or hybrid work, with travel for NACo conferences, meetings, and partner engagements.

Salary Range

$165,000-$190,000 commensurate with experience
