Year: 2016

The Broward County worker’s compensation program is self-administered and self-insured. It protects approximately 12,000 employees and volunteers. Broward County is the second most populous county in Florida, the 18th in the United States, and home to 31 municipalities including Fort Lauderdale. The county’s responsibilities include an extensive transportation system, cruise port and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The Medical Cost Reduction Program was initiated on October 1, 2012. The purpose of the program was to substantially reduce the average monthly medical expense which would allow the program to flourish in times of ever increasing budget demands. The results have been phenomenal. The average monthly medical expense for fiscal year 2015 was fifty percent of what it was in fiscal year 2013. The workers’ compensation loss fund finished fiscal year 2015 over $1 million under budget.
