The use of technology and innovative methods in County Departments continues to improve administrative processes. The County of San Bernardino Department of Public Health (DPH), utilized technology to operationalize its Strategic Plan through the use of a web-based tracking and reporting tool. In July 2017, DPH released its revised Strategic Plan for 2015 – 2020 in response to a community health assessment that was conducted to address the public health needs of San Bernardino County residents. The plan consisted of several organizational and program-specific objectives that were organized under five priority areas. Due to the magnitude of the plan and the number of staff involved in the process, a coordinated mechanism to track and report progress of strategic objectives was developed. DPH utilized technology and staff expertise to launch a web-based tracking and reporting mechanism. The customization of this tracking tool resulted in the implementation of the Department’s Strategic Plan and provided training and skill enhancement for staff in the use of technology to track program performance. The cost of the program was minimal in comparison to gains received from tracking and reporting progress on strategic objectives to ensure the Department’s vision of Healthy people in vibrant communities is achieved.
