The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) is the ninth largest water utility in the United States and the largest in the Southeast region. Its water distribution system is comprised of more than 8,000 miles of water pipes and as such the department is tasked with complying with water loss management and accountability practices as is required of water utilities serving major populations in the United States. WASD’s Leak Detection Program is presently being enhanced by the utilization of a fixed network system which is allowing the department to realize efficiencies and significant cost savings by identifying deficiencies in its infrastructure as it relates to water leaks in the water distribution and transmission system. The savings and enhancement obtained through the implementation of a fixed network system is allowing WASD to reduce the amount of square miles surveyed under traditional survey methods and minimize the exposure of employees who perform these duties in congested and hazardous conditions.
