In 2009, Wake County established a model for the local support of mental health and substance abuse services. The opening of WakeBrook Campus, a state-of-the-art behavioral health campus, was the culmination of many years of sophisticated planning that involved not only the architectural design and construction of two cutting edge poly-functional buildings, but also the blueprint for an integrated and seamless new system of care. The capital investment of $23 million and the annual contribution of $6 million for operations have provided this populous County with a cost effective way of responding to the surge in demand for services while simultaneously deterring consumers from psychiatric hospitals, emergency rooms, and jails. The results are remarkable. The new crisis and assessment center costs only $600.00 per patient visit, compared to $1,700.00 at local hospital emergency departments. One bed-day at the new residential crisis/detox facility costs about $500 compared to $1100 at a state hospital. Customer satisfaction is high. This new hub not only gives clients and families a high quality option for local behavioral health care, but also provides the entrance and connectivity into a comprehensive and outcome-based network of care that also includes access to needed health and social services in the consolidated Wake County Human Services agency.
