Reliable and affordable transportation for citizens to get to a dialysis treatment or to buy groceries for the family is fundamental to the health and welfare of a community. So what happens when escalating costs cause County leadership to question whether they can afford to continue providing it? A potential social crisis is averted through timely application of technology. The process of developing the application and asking the questions necessary to take it from concept to tangible product uncovered operational inconsistencies. Therefore, the application helped improve efficiency on more than one level. Now when trip requests are scheduled in the application, data flows over to the driver manifest and then to invoicing without having to be rekeyed. The application provides a measure of driver productivity that was not readily available in the paper-based system. Due to efficiency improvements gained through the use of this application, staff positions were realigned, with a savings of $64,931 per year, with more savings anticipated in the upcoming fiscal year. Also, continuity of operations is supported as the application reduces staffing vulnerability, relying less heavily on specialized knowledge and manual procedures, allowing non-dedicated staff to rotate in to assist as needed. Risk is also minimized from a data standpoint through a centralized database.
