Category: Transportation (Best in Category)

Year: 2014

Since 1988, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works (Public Works) has been the leader in a multijurisdictional coordination effort involving major arterials. The County’s role in this effort is to lead the design, construction and implementation of Traffic Signal Synchronization Program (TSSP) projects. These projects upgrade traffic signals along arterial routes of regional significance to current traffic standards, and implements coordination timing for improved traffic flow efficiency. Public Works' role leading this Program continues to this day. In 2013, Public Works implemented the next phase of the program with the construction of 10 projects on 13 routes covering 273 signals in 25 cities. To date, the Public Works has completed 135 projects on 102 routes, representing 2,670 signalized intersections. These projects have reduced travel times, delay and collisions, thereby alleviating motorist frustration, reducing air pollution, and decreasing vehicle-operating costs.
