Year: 2016

To ensure equitable access to technologies that enrich and improve lives through open access to information, communication and technology services, the Catawba County library established TechConnect, a digital learning space where citizens can explore and learn about technology, improve their digital literacy and gain hands on experience with professional design and engineering tools. The Western Piedmont Council of Governments partners with the library by staffing an NC Works career specialist in the library each week providing invaluable career guidance and training to citizens. Through a partnership with the Manufacturing Solutions Center the library is connected to local industry standards regarding professional tools, software applications and training. TechConnect offers citizens both Windows and Apple experiences to access engineering and design software as well as programs to facilitate the creation of digital content. TechConnect provides access to GoPro cameras, a 3D scanner, a 3D printer, a digital cutter and a sewing machine. Additionally, the library hired a dedicated digital services librarian to facilitate training workshops and one-on-one assistance to citizens. The TechConnect space responds to the library's community centered strategic plan goal to empower our community members with access to cutting edge technology. At TechConnect citizens can craft their dreams into reality.
