As globalization continues to effect communities across the nation, there is an increasing push to educate citizens about the modern world. Hamilton County is doing just that through their 4-part Sustainable Hamilton County – Reinventing Our Communities Workshop Series. Workshops included presentations by national and local experts. They challenged the audience with new ideas, models, and case studies that explored sustainability from the physical/built environment perspective; looked at demographic, housing, health and transportation trends; and discussed fiscal models and their effect in quality of life of communities. Average attendance was 150 per session. As part of a collaborative effort with key organizations in the region, through these workshops the County has bridged the gap between institutions of higher education (college professors and students), local units of government (and their leaders), members of the civic sector, and the private sector, towards the goal of creating a sustainable Hamilton County. As a result of this collaboration partnerships have been formed and innovative solutions will arise to address some of the many challenges experienced by our communities. These workshops were funded entirely by grants and donations.
