We have all heard the saying “If you want a job, you need experience,” and we all know that you cannot get experience without a job. The Summer Youth Program rectifies that problem by giving the youth in St. Lucie County, Florida the opportunity to gain important work experience that will help catapult them into the workforce and learn important skills that they can take with them into any career they choose. Summer jobs have proven to be beneficial for both program participants and employers. Not only are the youth participants gaining important skills and experience, but the employer is also gaining much needed assistance during peak busy periods while providing mentorship to a potential future employee. The St. Lucie County WORKS! Summer Youth Program provides youth participants from ages 16 to 21 with meaningful work experience and skill development. With the combined efforts of the St. Lucie Board of County Commissioners, Allegany Franciscan Ministries, Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County and CareerSource - Research Coast, young adults in our community can obtain important work experience, skills, networking opportunities and potential permanent employment. St. Lucie County believes in the growth and investment of the community, especially in our young adults. When we invest in the youth of our community, we are investing in our community’s future. The goal of the program is to provide 50 St. Lucie County youths with a meaningful summer work experience to prepare them for future careers. During the program, youth participants develop a thorough understanding of employer expectations such as professionalism, punctuality, meeting deadlines and performing job duties. Participants also increase their employability and work readiness skills, experience workplace success and build their self-esteem. The program has created great opportunities for our youth participants while giving aid to our participating locations.
