Differential/Community response is the prevention component of Compton’s Point of Engagement service delivery system. Families that are reported to the Child Protection Hotline, are identified as being from low to moderate risk of future abuse or neglect and are in need of support services are connected to community agencies without the family entering into the child protection system. DCFS-contracted Family Support agencies, various other community providers and the faith-based community have joined together to connect families to services such as food and clothing banks, mentorship programs, tutoring, employment, and job development services; domestic violence intervention, substance abuse awareness, and mental health and counseling services at no cost to the family. Through this program, community agencies and the faith-based community have organized to address the socio-economic issues that adversely affect these families. These agencies share their resources to support families and prevent them from entering the DCFS system. The family has a link to someone in the community who can help guide and advocate for them. The family feels less isolated and has someone to turn to for assistance if future needs arise. This is the first step at prevention and strengthening the community safety net for their families.
