The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT), Division of Highway Services, provides accurate real-time information about critical public works programs, projects and services to a customer base of over 1,000,000 residents, 375,000 households across a geographic region of 550 square miles using its “Social Solution of Public Works” initiative. This initiative has shown very impressive results. MCDOT is able to reach-out, in real-time, using its “Social Solution of Public Works” initiative to alert residents of issues potentially affecting the transportation system such as impending seasonal storms and forecasted impacts, major road conditions, clean-up efforts as well as public works programs and individual project status. In order to meet the information needs of a fast-paced, on-the-move society, MCDOT has merged major aspects of ‘communications’, including social media to reach its customers with important messaging. By merging, social media, the internet, in-house IT Solutions, smart phones, iPads, internet, old fashioned newsletters and its own website, MCDOT is reaching its entire customer base through the initiative known as Social Solution of Public Works”. Thus, the outcome “Social Solution of Public Works” was born. This initiative has proven to meet the informational needs of a fast-paced educated-society related to its transportation system and public works programs supporting that system.
