Broward County, Florida is committed to advance stormwater green infrastructure solutions and environmental outreach initiatives to enhance water quality, increase water storage, engage citizens, and promote environmental restoration. The Sistrunk Bioswale Community Demonstration Project is located in a 2-acre area along Sistrunk Blvd. It addresses stormwater management and the water quality, quantity, and safety of the downstream North Fork New River Canal. The project was developed by the County’s Environmental Planning and Community Resilience Division (EPCRD), in partnership with Highway Construction & Engineering, Highway & Bridge Maintenance, Parks and Recreation, Broward County Public Schools, National Wildlife Federation and Community partners. The project advanced education and community outreach efforts by engaging students and teachers of four nearby Title 1 schools. It incorporated a sustainability curriculum to provide students with the opportunity to learn about green infrastructure projects, participate in the design, implementation and monitoring, and volunteer in their community. It included the installation of trees and plants by students and community volunteers, which contribute to improved stormwater management, enhanced water quality, and habitat for wildlife, with additional tree canopy and green space within the community. Pre- and post-monitoring continue to be carried out with participating students.
