About the Program

Category: County Resiliency (Best in Category)

Year: 2018

Leon County is committed to providing citizens with a safe, convenient, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing transportation environment that promotes walking, cycling, and transit use. Over the past several years, the County has experienced increased demand for sidewalks, as reflected by the community’s desire for walkable neighborhoods, connectivity to local and regional amenities, and filling known gaps in current sidewalk systems. However, due to the limited availability of public funds for sidewalk construction, Leon County identified the need to develop ranking and selection criteria for future sidewalk projects. Accordingly, in 2015, Leon County adopted a policy to address the most pressing needs for sidewalks in priority order, leveraging limited available funds for the greatest community benefit and replacing the previous Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan model for sidewalk construction. Today, Leon County’s Sidewalk Prioritization and Funding Policy provides a dynamic evaluation model for sidewalk projects and makes the greatest use of several separate funding streams.
