Year: 2010

Tamar Village is a partnership between Shields for Families, a family centered treatment community agency, the Los Angeles County Departments of Children and Family Services (DCFS), Sheriff’s Department, Public Defender’s Office and the Alcohol and Drug Program Administration to provide comprehensive substance abuse treatment services with priority status for women who are involved with child welfare and are reentering the community from the criminal justice system. Tamar Village is a unique model where comprehensive family-centered treatment, follow-up and related social services are provided on-site in an apartment complex. Families live in an individual family apartment unit within the complex where treatment and other services are also located. After completion of treatment, families can remain in their apartments for a transitional period. DCFS has two Children’s Social Workers co-located on-site to provide case management services to Tamar Village families. Through this program, families can maintain custody of their children while in treatment or, if the children are in foster care, they can be reunited as soon as possible. Parents have an opportunity to receive a comprehensive array of services, but most importantly, regain stability and hope in their lives.
