About the Program

Category: Libraries (Best in Category)

Year: 2021

Heritage Library (a branch of the Yuma County Library District) began to develop curriculum in early 2019 to offer Senior Storytime to elderly patrons. The program was designed to help the library better serve their senior population by being more accessible to their community. If they could not go to the library, the library would go to them. The library provided an engaging and interactive storytime that allowed for the participants to socialize, reminisce, listen to music, and enjoy other activities to increase social interaction, stimulate memories, improved mood and concentration. Through participation in this program, senior patrons who had mobility and advanced mental health conditions were able to participate in a fun learning environment. Senior Storytime was launched in August 2019, and was offered every other Friday (twice a month) at the Yuma Senior Living community. The carefully selected children’s storybooks, music, and activities provided by the staff follow a theme, which encouraged participation in a welcoming environment. The varied themes ranged from current holidays to learning about celebrations around the world, traditions, food, pets, and their families.
