York County Fire and Life Safety conducted a lengthy engineering and design process with a major ambulance manufacturer to develop a safer and more ergonomically friendly ambulance design. Patient safety has always been a priority, but the current/traditional designs for most ambulances do little to ensure a safe environment for the care provider when they are engaged in direct patient care. The new design concept was developed to capitalize on knowledge of provider behaviors, ergonomics, and technologies to provide a safer working area for the care provider. The design allows care providers to remain secured in a five-point harness and still have access to the patient and all necessary patient care supplies and systems to provide outstanding patient care. The design also eliminates all that it has been requested to be featured at two national and one Virginia fire emergency medical services trade conferences.
