Palomar Mountain in North San Diego County is a very popular recreational area, home to both a state park and the famous Palomar Observatory. It is an extremely popular destinatin for both motorcyclists and motorists, and as such, in 2010, the County initiated a pilot project to install ground-in centerline rumble strips along the entire length of South Garde Road on Palomar Mountain in an effort to reduce the number of collisions involving motorcycles that cross the centerline. South Grade Road is one of the two main roads that provide access to the top of Palomar Mountain, and since the installation of the rumble strips, motorcycle collisions have been reduces by nearly 30%. Because of this overwhelming success, the County now has an annual program to install centerline rumble strips along selected roadways, in conjunction with the annual roadway resurfacing program, to reduce centerline crossover collisions involving all types of vehicles.
