Category: Libraries (Best in Category)

Year: 2020

In response to local third-grade reading proficiency rates, especially among students living in lower income areas, the Scott County Library developed and launched the Readmobile. The Readmobile is a mobile early learning space that brings literacy and fun to Scott County communities with visits to residential sites, community organizations, and special events. Since 2018, the Readmobile has delivered critical resources in community settings to help parents and caregivers interact with their children in ways that support early literacy skills and to connect families with community resources that support healthy child development. The Readmobile activities and materials foster the early literacy practices of reading, writing, talking, singing, and playing to prepare children for school, reading, and beyond. Children already in school have opportunities to build on positive literacy and learning experiences. During a typical Readmobile visit, children and their families engage with Readmobile materials including books, activities, and toys. They also read books, sing songs, repeat action rhymes, and enjoy creative play activities with library staff. The Readmobile curriculum, which aligns with the Minnesota Early Childhood Indicators of Progress, was developed by Scott County Library, Public Health, and Children’s Services staff. The vehicle was designed by Scott County Fleet and IT staff, with capital funding provided by the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community and a private trust. From the design of the vehicle to the delivery of services, the Readmobile represents a community-wide commitment to ensuring all children have the opportunity for a healthy and successful life.
