Gwinnett County, GA, located on the northeast corner of metro Atlanta, continues with its exponential growth. Adding upwards of 20,000 new citizens some years, its leaders have found many innovative ways to reach out to an increasingly diverse population. Local issues include transportation access, suburban poverty, affordable housing, revitalization, and aging infrastructure. To develop its innovative 2040 Unified Plan, Gwinnett used ambitious outreach strategies to set goals, assess needs, and recommend plans consistent with community values. The 2040 Unified Plan describes how county departments are working together to keep Gwinnett a preferred community. The result is a completely different document in terms of content and implementation practices from most other comprehensive planning efforts.
