About the Program

Category: Planning (Best in Category)

Year: 2012

Flash floods are a natural disaster that cannot be avoided in a desert environment. The Flood Control District (FCD) of Maricopa County helps to tame these flood waters, ensuring safety for its citizens. The District's Landscape Design team ensures that the materials, methods and themes for any project match the environment to create a sustainable, eco-friendly, visually pleasing addition to the existing landscape. The Pushbutton Landscape Inventory & Analysis (LIA) project was developed to allow the team to calculate all the possible permutations involving natural resources, characteristics, flood control structural types and methods as well as design themes and environmental compatibility in a timely manner. As a result of the program, a limited number of design possibilities are quickly evident. These rapid results eliminate the need for contracting additional resources when multiple projects occur at the same time and the estimated in-house labor hours for individual projects has been reduced from 80 hours to 16, an 80% savings.
