About the Program

Category: Libraries (Best in Category)

Year: 2015

Our Flu Vaccination Clinic program took place during the 2014-15 flu season – requiring collaboration between the County of Los Angeles Public Library, the County’s Department of Public Health, and the City of Los Angeles Public Library. Nineteen libraries total participated – seven city branch libraries and 12 County Community Libraries. A total of 2,159 people received vaccinations. We plan to replicate this program next flu season, using this year’s pilot data to inform next year’s library selection and, thus, maximize program participation. Annually, 10% to 20 % of Americans become ill with the flu and 24,000 people on average die from flu-related complications. In Los Angeles County, during the 2013-14 flu season, approximately 105 deaths were attributed to the flu – which is highly contagious. Pregnant women, children, adults 50 years of age and older, and immunocompromised individuals are especially susceptible. The best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated.
