Power IT Down provides Miami-Dade County with a centralized platform for the automatic powering down of computers, remote wake-up, and reporting services for tracking long-term energy savings. The Enterprise Technology Services Department (ETSD) spearheaded the effort to host the technical hardware and software platform, as well as to provide the project management and programming services to implement the Power IT Down system. The program implementation was accomplished in a multi-phase approach. By the completion of the implementation, the system has the ability to provide Power IT Down services to over 60 County departments. The system includes several key components which are as follows: the client application, server application, web-based Wake-On-LAN (WOL) application, and reporting server. Users can see how their department is saving energy by powering the computers down at night and even compare themselves to others throughout the County. This initiative brings awareness of the importance to save energy.
