Recognizing the need to address a growing problem, Pike County Judge/Executive Wayne T. Rutherford, the Pike County Fiscal Court and Deputy Solid Waste Commissioner Mike Lyons developed a comprehensive and far-reaching nuisance ordinance for Pike County. This is the first time the county government has addressed the problem of blighted structures. This program is the platform used to demolish unsightly, unsafe and abandoned dwellings. The result has been noticeable. Houses have been torn down in all six of Pike County’s magisterial districts. The ordinance also allows for property owners to tear down structures declared dilapidated under the county’s ordinance, which saves the county time and money. Because of the plan’s development, Pike County is making great strides in nuisance removal. Not only is the county creating cleaner and safer communities, but property owners are also taking the initiative to remove blighted structure at no cost to the county. To date, several houses have been torn down by the county, multiple houses have been torn down by property owners and 33 additional sites are currently scheduled for demolition.
