The Livingston County PIT (Pathway Into Trades) Crew is an intergovernmental collaboration between the Livingston County Departments of Social Services, Central Services and Workforce Development to reduce poverty by providing recipients of public assistance with in-demand job skills through the completion of public works projects. The PIT Crew provides its participants, mandated by federal work requirements, with a more meaningful work experience. Working alongside the County’s Central Services Department, participants are exposed to a variety of trade work that leads to the development of transferable skills through on-the-job training. Formation of the PIT Crew aligned with a decision by the Livingston County Board of Supervisors to enhance recreational amenities at a county-owned park. The PIT Crew was assigned this task and, for the past 18 months, has been working alongside the Department of Central Services. During this time, PIT Crew members have had the opportunity to shape a new trail system, build pavilions, rehabilitate water features and install new amenities throughout the park. This project has provided the PIT Crew members with a sense of pride, accomplishment and connection to their community. Several members have also successfully transitioned into employment and off public assistance
