About the Program

Category: Human Services (Best in Category)

Year: 2014

In 2012, Leon County held the first annual “Operation Thank You!” (OTY) event to honor veterans and members of the armed forces and recognize occasions significant to the Leon County military/veteran community. Past events have honored Post-911 and Vietnam era veterans. This year’s OTY event will honor World War II veterans by commemorating the 70th anniversary of Allied troops landing on the beaches of Normandy, France (D-Day). OTY events have helped the County forge strong partnerships with veteran groups in the community, allowing the Leon County Veteran Services Division (LCVS) to better understand and serve the estimated 18,500+ veterans and their families in Leon County. LCVS assists veterans with employment opportunities, education benefits, counseling, and onsite training and has seen a 149% increase in veterans served Since FY 2012. Through OTY events, Leon County continues to both educate the public on services offered by Leon County Government for veterans and provide an annual celebration to honor veterans and service members in the community.
