Due to increasing demands from digital government initiatives and the need for secure, reliable access to services, OET implemented a network modernization initiative to re-architect the County’s network infrastructure including the replacement of end-of-life equipment, improved network routing, and establishment of a carrier-grade Optical Network Services (ONS) ring that connects the County’s major campuses and technology hubs. Successful completion of these efforts created redundant and highly reliable connections while also removing unneeded complexity. The new ONS ring also provided scalable bandwidth (up to multiple 100 Gbps connections) to meet the forecasted needs for additional capacity and improve the customers’ experience. In addition to resolving weaknesses, the new ONS ring directly supports the ability of County departments to efficiently conduct digital business including Geographic Information Services, Electronic Document Management, and Unified Communications services.
