About the Program

Category: Children and Youth (Best in Category)

Year: 2013

The North Carolina Association of County Commissioners strives to bring a diverse mix of youth representatives from each of North Carolina’s 100 counties to its annual Youth Summit to communicate youth issues with county leaders and allow youth to learn about the issues that county governments face. The two-day Youth Summit is held in conjunction with the NCACC’s Annual Conference each August. The Summit was formed as part of a youth leadership development initiative of 2009-10 NCACC President Mary Accor, a now former Cleveland County (N.C.) Commissioner. In each of its first three years, the Youth Summit has drawn participants from at least 70 counties, has increased participants’ understanding of what counties do, and has engaged county commissioners with youth from their communities on a statewide level.
