The Multnomah Food Initiative (MFI) & Action Plan (MFAP) is a comprehensive strategy and a planning tool for the government and the community on food system issues. The purpose of the MFI is to promote a local food system that reflects the values of our community. The goal of the Initiative is to develop a shared community vision, collaborative food system principles, and a 15-year Multnomah Food Action Plan that supports the increase of viable local options in our food system; making the healthy choice an easier choice for all; building systemic justice, health, and food security; and promoting a thriving local economy. The Multnomah Food Action Plan was developed with significant community input and incorporates the findings of the Multnomah Food Action Report. The 15-year action plan offers four action areas containing 16 goals and 65 community-wide collaborative actions for local government, businesses, non-profit organizations, faith communities, and learning institutions. This Plan also offers 40 actions for individual community members who’s daily choices or lack of choices in what to eat, where to shop, and how to become an advocate for change greatly influence our community. The MFAP has already contributed toward short-term goals of food production for the needy and economic development and continues to provide a framework for big-picture challenges such as livability and climate change. Over 500 organizations support the MFAP, with all 65 goals currently being implemented and tracked.
