About the Program

Category: Volunteers (Best in Category)

Year: 2011

Hanover County's population has nearly doubled in the last thity years, and with such a dramtic increase in population, naturally, comes an increase in traffic, particularly between the morning and evening rush hours. Call volume for traffic related incidents within these times spikes fairly reguarly. In 2010, however, the Sheriff's office began researching methods for citizens to volunteer their time to suppliment uniform patrol functions. The Sheriff's office began examining the procedures and policies of other programs that were developed to deal with similar problems. The information gathered from this research proved to be extrmely useful, and the Sheriff's Department was able to produce a manual that contained information for how motorists ought to handle directing traffic at accident scenes and special events, assisting disabled motorists, assisting with the Sheriff's Office Citizen's Courtesy Patrol, and other similarly helpful information. The program has currently logged over 1,635 vounteer hours since July 2010 and has been overwhelmingly successful in helping the 103,000 citizens of hanover as well as assisting the patrol division.
