The Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services Agency, in partnership with a County-wide, multidiscipline representative Project Oversight Group, has successfully facilitated the completion of the Los Angeles County Mass Fatality Management Guide for Healthcare Entities. The scope of this groundbreaking endeavor includes guidance for hospitals, medical clinics, and skilled nursing facilities located in Los Angeles County to effectively manage mass fatality operations within their scope as a healthcare partner. The Los Angeles County Mass Fatality Management Guide for Healthcare Entities was created to aid partners in the development of a detailed, well organized and realistic plan to manage a surge of fatalities on a County-wide level and to effectively transition from normal to disaster operations. The guide includes directions for mass fatality plan development and successful activation, operation, and demobilization strategies for partners within Los Angeles County. As such, the guide seeks to provide a framework for mass fatality management during large-scale disasters (e.g., earthquakes); smaller, more localized incidents (e.g., explosion, shooting); as well as long-term events, (e.g., widespread infectious disease outbreaks).
