Listen-Empathize-Agree-Partner ® (LEAP) shows individuals how to quickly gain the trust of someone that they are at odds with. When someone performs LEAP, they stop trying to convince the other person that they are wrong. Instead, the individual listens in a new way that conveys respect for the personâs point of view. This may sound like a simple task, however most individuals have a very hard time doing this. Learning to LEAP helps make this task more achievable. The result is an immediate lowering of tension, anger and defensiveness. As individuals convey genuine understanding, empathy and respect for the other personâs point of view, even when they disagree with it, they are free to find common ground on which they can partner. LEAP focuses on transforming the relationship first. The program illustrates how people do not establish or grow relationships with mentally ill individuals based on the strength of an opinion or belief. Rather, relationships are grown and made stronger because of the open communication and mutual understanding of the people in the relationship. LEAP is for any relationship, but it also gives you the tools you need to persuade someone in âdenialâ about mental illness to accept treatment and services
