In an ongoing effort to ensure the competitiveness of Wake County’s compensation structure, Human Resources conducts an annual labor market study. The County’s existing process required extensive manual data entry, causing data integrity issues while leaving little time for data scrubbing and analysis. As the County grew to over 300 job classifications, HR realized that there had to be a better way to approach this business problem. To remain competitive in the market, the Department needed to improve its approach to analyzing, projecting, and implementing changes to its compensation structure. Wake’s HR and Innovation teams partnered together to design a solution. The team built an in-house tool that features a user-friendly survey design, streamlined data compiling, built-in data validation, salary survey matching features, integrated projection tools, and an analytics dashboard. The result of the redesign lead to an 84% response rate (9% increase from previous year). Through the redesign of the survey interface, errors in transposing respondent data were eliminated. A 6-week manual data entry process was reduced to a 30-minute task, allowing the Department to repurpose efforts towards more accurate and robust analysis and projections. Dashboard analytics and built-in data validation tools now allow the Department to manage their compensation structure more efficiently and accurately.
