The “It’s a No Drainer” program is a series of one-day sessions that invite the general public to drop off unwanted or expired non-controlled medications, sharps, and mercury thermometers to be disposed of in an environmentally safe way. CVS Pharmacy partners in the event, sorting through the medication, answering any questions regarding individual multi-prescription interaction. CVS also provides health-oriented items like hand sanitizer, soap, pillboxes, and snack food. Additionally, digital thermometers provided by the Wayne County Department of Environment are exchanged for mercury ones that are brought in. The collected medication is disposed of by the Environmental Resource Group. All medications are incinerated. Any controlled substances turned in are handed over to an on-site local police officer. The Wayne County Department of Environment is also on-site and sets up a table with handouts highlighting county services provided to the public. Wayne County has conducted three “It’s a No Drainer” events and has had an excellent response. Many of the participants have requested the program in their area on a monthly basis.
