The average irrigated yard in Gainesville uses 299 gallons of groundwater a day for a combined countywide use of almost 5 million gallons of water a day. This water comes from the same source which is needed to replenish our springs, rivers, and lakes, which are a major source of drinking water, tourism and recreation for our area. On September 22, 2015 the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners adopted a new landscape irrigation efficiency code to promote water conservation and improve water quality. A part of this new code requires irrigation contractors within the county to register their businesses, provide details and plans for the installations they perform, and remit payment to the County for the fees associated with the code. In support of these new requirements, County Information Technology (IT) staff, along with the County Environmental Protection Department (EPD) staff, developed a new customized software application which enables contractors to fulfil these requirements online and also allows County staff to review, approve and inspect jobs via automated electronics workflows.
